Error makes a better marker of tribal membership than truth. Anyone will say "2 + 2 = 4". If my tribe insists that you add the qualifier "except when t's seven", I will recognize members of my tribe instantly.

Anyone might wear sensible clothes. Prescribe a strange hat as customary and members of the tribe will be instantly recognizable.
