And so perhaps the natural follow-up question is: Why are so many of the contentious issues, controversies, and despicable behavior nowadays precipitated by those people who define themselves primarily by their sexual proclivities?

It's weird to identify oneself by what you choose to insert or be inserted. If you're not interesting in any other part of your life, is that the best you can do?
It seems to me that everything has to be about sex, because if it isn't (and we all know it isnt) there is no justification for gay marriage. If marriage is about raising children or inheritance or combining assets, the law already provides for many other avenues to do that, other than a sexual relationship.
Very well put. It‘s not prudery to be choosy about where and with whom one canoodles…. As an old goat who experienced the sexual revolution of the ‘60s and ‘70s from the front line trenches, it always seemed to me one had to balance one’s natural lust (but give it a good ‘due’ as it were) with everything else…it was all too easy to lose focus on other goals, needs, and responsibilities if one let his little head lead oneself about.

When I see a person (or a demographic) that worships their animal drives, my working hypothesis is that they see their life, indeed life in general, as ultimately pointless. There's nothing to die for, nothing to live for, nothing to which to dedicate yourself, no altar onto which to throw your sensory pleasures as a sacrifice for...something bigger and better than them.
People who want to climb the tallest mountain, win a gold medal, invent that which nobody has imagined before, lift their children, their cause, or their organization up higher than to where you can get yourself -- they don't think or act this way. They see a purpose, and the animal pleasures are fine in their place, but they know how to set them aside when it's time to pursue the purpose.
But contrariwise, if you have no real purpose -- why *not* obsess over sex? It's about the greatest of the animal pleasures (at least until you get old, when not having your back hurt ornot breathing hard going up the stairs takes precedence). So if there's nothing more important to which to dedicate yourself, why not spend all your time, effort, and ability talking about sex and all the ways you can do it?
The alarming concomitant, though, is that the prevalence of sex-obsession suggests a shocking number of our fellow human beings are living lives that seem (from the inside) completely pointless.
I lived with my friend (female) for seven years without us hitting the sheets. I felt it was wrong and immoral, as did she. We've now been married for 19 years, and still feel it was an excellent decision fir us. We became very good (platonic) friends before we committed to marriage.
While I like sex, I am bored by watching it or reading about it (anything more than a brief mention of the event in a book causes me to skip over that part. The mechanics don’t interest me sufficiently to waste time reading about it).
