Choosing the Character

julietteo.substack.com

There are three characters in my first novel who are in the running for protagonist of the second novel. Tale of the Tigers was set in the early 1990s, so it’s likely that the time period would be in this century. (Fun fact: one of the reviewers of ToTT couldn’t understand why I sprinkled 90s pop cultural facts into the narrative.)

Here are the candidates with their ages in the 90s; none was a main character:

Amanda (20s) - white woman; college graduate

Adrienne (20s) - bi-racial woman; college graduate; athlete

Elijah (late 40s/early 50s) - black man; working-class retiree

Without spoiling ToTT, my favorite is Elijah, since we barely got to know him. Because of his age, I might set the events in 2018 or thereabouts. Or I might not!

Thank you to all who have contributed! $410.

AFTERTHOUGHT: The great thing about being a storyteller is that you can create a character who is similar to a person that you know, who has wronged you, and you can have … um … misfortune befall that character. Oh I have plans!

Would Elijah be about my age in 2018? Life gives you a lot of knowledge if you let it.
